Odette Paul

Biography

Odette’s background includes Critical Care nursing, Clinical Education, and General Surgical nursing.  In April 2018 she was appointed to the role of Nurse Coordinator, Sepsis Quality Improvement at Waikato DHB, a role which was created in response to the increasing burden of sepsis.  Since then, Odette has coordinated the development and implementation of clinical tools and education programs within Waikato DHBs five hospital sites, with the overall goal of improving outcomes for individuals at high risk of sepsis.

Sneaky Sepsis

It is estimated that every four seconds someone in the world dies of sepsis, making it more deadly than heart attack and stroke.  In New Zealand, infection related hospital admissions and MDROs are on the rise and along with these factors we can expect the rates of sepsis to rise too.  Understanding sepsis can give us the foundations to recognise it early and act appropriately and ultimately save lives.  This presentation will cover the incidence of sepsis both internationally and within New Zealand, pathophysiology of sepsis, recognising sepsis, and responding to sepsis.
