The LML workshop can also be attended by non-delegates for $65 (ASOR and SCLAA members) or $80 (others).<\/p>\n<h2>Modelling Complex Warfighting<\/h2>\n<p>From 9am, 6 December 2018<\/p>\n<p>Defence Science and Technology Group&#8217;s Modelling Complex Warfighting (MCW) Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) seeks to revolutionise how DST undertakes operations analysis to better handle the interaction of complex geopolitical, social, technological, economic and cultural factors for design of the future force. Force design is the planning and decision-making process regarding military equipment and future defence operations. Such decisions are often made under conditions of high uncertainty and without assumptions on predictability or stability of the system. The MCW SRI aims to address four themes in the force design and future defence force employment problems. At the workshop, we will explore the motivations and progress in the MCW SRI, particularly highlighting the successful responses to a recent Expression of Interest (EOI) process where DST Group sought proposals from Australian industry and research agencies about products and tools for use in operational analysis and decision support.<\/p>\n<h2>RO+OR &#8211; Real Options and Operations Research<\/h2>\n<p>9am-12.30pm, 6 December 2018<\/p>\n<p>Real options analysis originated in mathematical finance and is based on financial options pricing theory. As a technique, it typically involves the utilisation of optimal control techniques coupled with numerical simulation, and can be viewed as both time-sequential multi-stage optimal decision-making and project valuation in a highly uncertain environment with non-stationary dynamics. Real options analysis has most often been used for industrial applications such as mining, asset management, infrastructure, energy, defence, and agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this workshop is to explore the concepts, progress and possibilities associated with combining real options methods with combinatorial optimisation in order to address decision making under severe uncertainty. The agenda is built around three insightful 30 minute presentations on theory and applications, from: Prof. Margaret Armstrong (EMAp Fundacao Getulio Vargas Brazil); Dr. Hawthorne Beyer (University of Queensland \/ CEED); and Dr. Olivia Smith (Telstra).<\/p>\n<p>For more information, see <a href=\"http:\/\/asor.org.au\/index.php\/23-ro-or-workshop-dec-2018\">http:\/\/asor.org.au\/index.php\/23-ro-or-workshop-dec-2018<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Challenges and Opportunities in Last Mile Logistics<\/h2>\n<p>1.30pm-5.30pm, 6 December 2018<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The last mile is a metaphor used to describe the movement of goods from a fulfilment centre to their final destination. In other words, the last mile is the last leg of your product&#8217;s trip before it arrives on your customer&#8217;s doorstep.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This four-hour workshop has been crafted to inform and inspire professionals in transport, logistics, marketing and digitally-enabled commerce, as well as students and researcher in cyberphysical technologies, data analytics, AI and optimisation.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop\u2019s keynote speaker is Hugh Donald Ratliff from Georgia Tech (USA). Don Ratliff is presently the Executive Director of the Georgia Tech Panama Logistics Innovation and Research Center, and a Partner at Supply Chain Ventures, LLC. He is a supply chain and logistics expert with more than 40 years of experience as an educator, researcher, consultant, and technology business executive.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Don\u2019s keynote presentation, the workshop will comprise short presentations, panel discussions and structured audience participation involving thought leaders, experts, practitioners, and entrepreneurs with diverse perspectives on meeting the challenges of last mile logistics.
